Level and Behavior Management System

Level I

In level I, students are isolated in individual carrels facing the back of their carrel. These carrels allow very little visibility of the rest of the classroom and interaction with other students is not allowed. Talking is not allowed without staff permission. Students eat in their carrels. Two bathroom breaks will be allowed, however, more may be requested as required.

Goal. Students will learn the school rules and procedures and will demonstrate that they can follow these rules for a specified period.

Requirements. Students will:
1. Complete orientation.
2. Review the student handbook.
3. Learn the classroom rules with 100% accuracy.
4. Demonstrate listening skills.
5. Complete assignments.
6. Begin the petition process to change levels.
7. Use common courtesies.

Procedures. Students will:
1. Have cursory search for unauthorized items daily.
2. Empty all pockets and remove all jewelry daily.
3. Remain in their carrel facing the wall without talking.
4. Demonstrate being silent, remaining seated, following directions, raising their hand for help, and answering staff appropriately.
5. Be closely supervised by an adult.
6. Be accompanied by an adult while out of the classroom.
7. Eat lunch in their carrel.
8. Complete the rules assignment and begin regular school study.
9. Have restroom and water breaks at the scheduled class time.

Mastery of Level I.

After a student earns a satisfactory rating in academics and behavior for seven consecutive days or for nine of ten days, is proficient in all rules and procedures, demonstrates that he/she will not harm themselves or others, and completes a petition, movement to Level II is made.

Level II

In Level II students remain in the carrels. Students are allowed to participate in closely supervised group activities, but only after modeling acceptable behavior. They will continue to each lunch in their carrels, they may turn their desk to face outwards during lunch but no talking is permitted. More movement is allowed with teacher permission. Bathroom breaks remain the same as Level I, however, two five-minute breaks per day may be earned.

Goal. Students will begin to develop the skills to manage their own behavior.

Requirements. Students will:
1. Use self-control
2. Identify self-responsibility
3. Ask permission.
4. Learn from mistakes, and make corrections.
5. Ask for help (schoolwork/behavior) from teachers.
6. Respond appropriately.
7. Complete assignments with passing grades.

Procedures. Students will:
1. Continue to empty pockets daily.
2. Face toward the side of the carrel during discussions.
3. Lose their level if any three of five days are lost.
4. Participate in structured peer interaction.
5. Earn two five minute breaks per day.

Mastery of Level. Maintain at least a satisfactory rating on each social/behavior skill on the daily report card. Earn a minimum of a satisfactory on eight consecutive days or nine of ten days. Once the petition is complete, advance to Level III.

Level III.

Students turn desks to face the middle of the classroom. They may eat lunch at a designated table with peers and talk quietly during the meal. They may possess certain approved personal items and may wear a watch. They may be assigned teacher assistant duties that will be supervised.

Goal. Students will demonstrate the ability to evaluate their own behavior and demonstrate by leading group meetings.

Requirements. Students will:
1. Be a role model for lower levels.
2. Be honest.
3. Express feelings.
4. Help teach group sessions.
5. Complete petition.
Procdures. Students will:
1. Place desk facing out of carrel.
2. Complete petition.
3. Lose level if three out of five days are lost.
Mastery of Level. Maintain an excellent rating on each social/behavior section of the daily report card. Earn a satisfactory rating on all available areas for nine consecutive days. Must score at least 70% on all academic work assigned for the number of days measured. Complete the petition to change levels.

Level IV

Students at this level are ready to transition back to the regular classroom. The student may begin by spending all or part of his school day in the regular classroom. There will be a probationary period during which time the student may be returned to AEP for major infractions or difficulties encountered. During the probationary period automatic set backs will occur for abusive language, physical attacks, carrying of weapons or drugs.

Goal. Students will be mainstreamed back to the regular campus.

Requirements. Students will:
1. Begin transition to the regular campus.
2. Ask for assistance if required.
