Students who are new to Mount Vernon High School sometimes have an adjustment period to meet our standards. Our goal is to provide an atmosphere that is free of distractions for all students and staff. The way we dress for school reflects our preparation and our attitude toward our classmates, teacehrs and staff members. Dress for success !!
Our dress guidelines are not extreme. However, what you see listed below is enforced and expected everyday. Please contact me if you have questions regarding our dress code.
DRESS AND GROOMING
The District's dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and
minimize safety hazards. The District prohibits pictures, emblems, or writing on clothing that
are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene, or that depict or advertise tobacco products, alcoholic
beverages of any kind, drugs, or any other substance prohibited under policy FNCF(L). Students
and parents may determine a student's personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they
comply with the following:
· Button type shirts are to be buttoned to within one button of the top of the shirt or whatever is
appropriate and reasonable for the shirt. All shirts worn by boys are to be worn inside the
trousers with the exception of sweaters and sweatshirts (grades 4-12). Shirts worn over Tshirts
are to be worn inside the trousers and buttoned appropriately. Sports uniform type
jerseys are to be worn inside the trousers.
· Hair should be cut often enough to ensure good grooming. To participate in extracurricular
activities or to represent the Mt. Vernon ISD, a boy may not wear a hairstyle that extends
beyond the shirt collar. Hair must be kept clean and neat. Any unnatural hair color (ex:
yellow, purple, red, blue, pink, green) is a violation of the Mt. Vernon ISD student dress
code.
· Beards may not be worn on chin or bottom lip. Sideburns must be of appropriate length
and not be disruptive or distracting. Sideburns must be kept neatly trimmed.
· Boys may not wear earrings.
· Ornaments in, on or around the ears of male students or in, on or around the nose, eyebrows,
lips, or tongue of any student will not be worn during the school day or at school sponsored
activities.
· Students are not allowed to wear see through or midriff type tops. Straps must be a minimum
of three (3”) inches wide. Tops must cover undergarments. Necklines may not be revealing.
If skin is exhibited when sitting, standing, or raising the arms the top is not appropriate.
Swimsuit type clothing is not appropriate at school or school activities. Boys may not wear
sleeveless shirts, tank tops or “muscle shirts” to school as their primary shirt.
· Skirt length and short length will be no more than three (3”) inches above the knee when in a
kneeling position. Tight fitting shorts may not be worn. All shorts must be hemmed. Upon
the third violation of the skirt/short length policy the incident will be handled under the
Student Code of Conduct as a discipline violation.
· Pants must be worn at the waist and may not be torn or ripped inappropriately. Pants that
are torn or ripped above the knee are considered inappropriate. If pants are worn
inappropriately at the waist, administrative action will be taken to ensure compliance.
· No pajama pants or sleep pants are to be worn at school.
· Caps, hats, toboggans, or any other type of head coverings are considered unacceptable
inside the buildings and are violations of the dress code of Mt. Vernon ISD.
· Nonprescription sunglasses may not be worn inside the buildings of the Mt. Vernon ISD.
· After one warning school personnel will take head coverings and/or sunglasses and return
them only to parents.
· Shoes must be worn at all times. House shoes are a violation of the dress code policy.
· Chains on clothing may not be worn at school.
· Bandannas may not be worn from the waist, belt loops, pockets, or around the neck as a sign
of group affiliation.
· Any dress or grooming that, in the principal’s or assistant principal’s judgment may
reasonably be expected to interfere with normal school operations is prohibited. Students
repeatedly in violation of the dress and grooming policy will be subject to other disciplinary
measures as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Students will be expected to be in
proper dress from the time of their arrival at school until their departure from the campus. |
