Cheerleader Constitution 2007-2008
RULES, REGULATIONS, AND OBLIGATIONS
I. Rules and Regulations
Rules and regulations for the school and the organization are necessary to achieve the discipline needed for the organization to operate smoothly and to achieve its goals. All spirit group members are expected to conform to classroom rules and regulations as well as school rules. School rules will be published by the school administration in your student handbook. Each set of rules and regulations will be consistent throughout the school district and will be enforced by the sponsor of the spirit group. In order to be successful, students must comply with the set standards. Failure to follow the standards given below will result in members’ receiving demerits, being suspended, or dismissed (see “Merit/Demerit System”).
A. A. Cheerleaders and mascots must maintain a grade of 70 or above in all subjects each six-weeks. All members must follow the state’s “No-Pass, No-Play” rules.
B. B. Cheerleaders and mascots will attend all practices, athletic events, playoff activities, and camps designated by the sponsor(s). Members must participate in any and all projects to promote school spirit. Failure to participate in these areas of responsibility will result in demerits, possible probation for a set time, or removal from squad.
C. C. Cheerleaders and mascots will take a break during half time, but are not allowed to leave the stadium or gym during that time. Each cheerleader and mascot must be back on the field or court at 2:00 before the start of the game, period, or half. If a cheerleader is a participant of a sporting activity, such as basketball, he or she is to be dressed and ready by the 2nd quarter.
D. D. Cheerleaders and mascot will meet in the high school commons prior to each event, unless other plans have been made. They will be expected to be in full uniform.
E. E. Indifferences between squad members will be settled as quickly as possible, with the assistance of the sponsor if necessary, and in a confidential manner.
F. F. Cheerleaders and mascot will not wear jewelry of any kind to any event or practice. This includes: earrings (of any kind), necklaces, watches, belly rings, and any other body piercing jewelry.
G. G. Gum is not allowed during practice, pep rallies, or games.
H. H. Cheerleaders and mascot will not stand idle, congregate to talk, or practice a cheer while cheering.
I. I. Cheerleaders and mascot will not have a job or outside commitments that will interfere with required activities, practices and game schedules.
J. J. Cheerleaders and mascot must be present and on time for all activities, classes, practices, performances and spirit functions. Total commitment to the squad is expected.
K. K. If a Varsity cheerleader/mascot misses a scheduled practice he/she will not cheer at the pep rally the following Friday and will sit out the first half of the football or basketball game. NO EXCEPTIONS! If a JV Cheerleader/mascot misses a scheduled practice he/she will not cheer during the first half of the game the following Thursday night. The cheerleader/mascot will sit with sponsor during the first half of the game. NO EXCEPTIONS!
L. L. Mt. Vernon High School cheerleaders and mascots are official ambassadors of Mt. Vernon Independent School District and will be expected to behave in a manner exemplary of good moral and social conduct at all times: BOTH ON AND OFF THE CAMPUS!
M. M. While in uniform, cheerleaders and mascots are expected to follow all school rules as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct in the Mt. Vernon High School handbook.
N. N. While in uniform either on or off the field, cheerleaders and mascots shall not show any type of public display of affection to the opposite sex.
O. O. Cheerleaders and mascot are expected to set good examples and become role models as positive influences upon fellow students.
P. P. Cheerleaders and mascot must demonstrate a supportive attitude toward school officials, policies, and the total program at Mt. Vernon ISD.
Q. Q. Cheerleaders and mascot should be morale-boosters, helping hands, and friends to ALL students at Mt. Vernon ISD.
R. R. If a cheerleader or mascot is a disciplinary problem in the classroom, etc., he or she will not only be punished accordingly but will also be dealt with however the sponsor deems necessary.
S. S. Cheerleaders and mascot will comply with any specific directive given by the sponsor during the year for situations not anticipated.
T. T. All cheerleaders and mascots fall under all campus-district extra-curricular guidelines and all UIL rules.
U. U. Cheerleaders and mascots are elected to support the athletic and academic teams and to promote school and community spirit.
II. OBLIGATIONS
V. A. Cheerleaders
Responsibilities
1. 1. Cheerleaders will attend summer camp July 19 -22 at SMU in Dallas and summer practices – 1 week in July before camp, and 2 weeks in August. Cheerleaders will not practice in June.
2. 2. Elected cheerleaders will practice during the months of April and May, 2007, and participate in fundraisers.
3. 3. If the squad decides to compete in a national competition, extra practices will be required for all members.
4. 4. Varsity cheerleaders will practice every Wednesday night during football season, sign painting after school, other practices as needed, and Monday nights or Thursday nights during basketball season. JV Cheerleaders will practice Monday nights. NO ABSENCES ACCCEPTED. The sponsor will call other practices as needed. YOUR JOB OR OTHER ACTIVITIES MUST NOT INTERFERE WITH PRACTICES OR GAMES!!!!
5. 5. JV cheerleaders will attend all football and home district basketball games. Varsity cheerleaders will attend all football games and scrimmages and all district basketball games.
6. 6. Cheerleaders are responsible for the purchase of their camp wear and uniforms. The estimated cost is $650.00. A $150 deposit, which will go toward the cost of the uniform, will be collected on March 5 from each elected cheerleader and mascot.
7. 7. School purchased equipment will be returned by the cheerleader to the sponsor on the day following the Spring Athletic Banquet.
8. 8. Cheerleaders will be organized and ready to perform at all times.
9. ALL Cheerleaders/mascots will participate in a cheer clinic in the fall for young children, get sponsors for the cheer clinic, and sell tickets for dances and other events throughout the year.
10. Attend volleyball playoff games and at least 1 regular season game.
9/JV Home Football Game Duties: These squads are responsible for the sales of the football programs at each home game including Homecoming. The sponsor(s) will assign four to five different cheerleaders to sell programs and raise the flag for each home game including Homecoming. Cheerleaders will stay at their assigned gate until all programs are sold or the beginning of third quarter, depending on which comes first.
Absences
The only acceptable excuse for absence or failure to participate is a medical excuse from the doctor. Word of mouth excuses and parent notes are unacceptable. The doctor must write a note addressed to the sponsor. If the cheerleader has a doctor’s note stating that he or she is unable to work out or cheer, the sponsor will need a copy, along with a note stating when the cheerleader may start participating again. If the cheerleader is sidelined she/he will attend all practices and games, even though he or she will not be participating with the squad.
B. Mascots
Responsibilities

6. 6. Mascots are responsible for the purchase of his/her camp wear. The estimated cost is $250.00. A $150 deposit, which will go toward the cost of the uniform, will be collected on March 5 from each elected cheerleader and mascot. The school will provide the mascot uniform. The student elected as mascot shall be responsible for taking excellent care of the uniform and will be responsible for all props and their expense.
7. 7. School purchased equipment will be returned by the mascot to the
Sponsor on the day following the Spring Athletic Banquet.
8. 8. Mascots are expected to participate in all practices, activities, etc.
9. 9. The mascot is considered a cheerleader and will participate accordingly and practice with the squad.
10. 10. Mascots will be organized and ready to perform at all times. The mascot is responsible for skits (if used) and any other material that will be used for a pep rally or at any other activity. If using a skit for a pep rally, it must be approved and ready by Wednesday of that week.
9/JV Home football game duties: These squads are responsible for the sales of the football programs at each home game including Homecoming. Cheerleaders will stay at their assigned gate until all programs are sold or the beginning of third quarter, depending on which comes first.

MERIT/DEMERIT SYSTEM
Cheerleaders and mascots will receive merits and demerits based on the following:
Merits
Community Service 2 merits per week
(Tutoring, reading to children, etc.- must be approved and documented)
A-B Honor Roll 2 merits
Demerits
Late to practice or other activity 1 demerit
Late to game 2 demerits
Absence from practice or other activity 5 demerits
Absence from game 5 demerits
Violation of Mt. Vernon High School Code of Conduct 1-5 demerits (and/or disciplinary action by sponsor and/or school officials)
Violation of Cheerleader/Mascot Constitution 1-5 demerits
(and/or disciplinary action by sponsor and/or school officials)
Displaying a Poor Attitude or
an Unwillingness to work with other members 1-5 demerits
Out of Uniform (1 demerit per article) 1-5 demerits
Insubordination 1-5 demerits
(and/or disciplinary action by sponsor and/or school officials)
Any cheerleader or mascot who violates any rules may be given demerits, required to sit out all or part of a sporting event, suspended from participation, or dismissed from the squad. Any cheerleader or mascot receiving five demerits will be suspended from the team for 2 weeks. A cheerleader or mascot that is suspended must be in full uniform and sit with the sponsor at all events where the squad is participating. Any cheerleader or mascot receiving ten demerits will be dismissed from the team and will not be allowed to tryout for cheerleader or mascot for the next school year. All disciplinary action will be at the discretion of the sponsor and/or principal in accordance will all rules and policies as outlined in the Mt. Vernon High School Handbook and Code of Conduct and the Mt. Vernon High School Cheerleader/Mascot Constitution.
A cheerleader/mascot is allowed to work off demerits. A total of 2 merits may be earned in one week. If a cheerleader repeatedly comes close to the 10-demerit mark being dismissed from the squad is likely to happen.
